best salsa and chips

The best chips and Salsa in Fresno is Javier's on Kings Canyon. Chips are moist with the right amount of oil and Salsa has the right tang to it. Give them a try.Linda Vonk

Chips n Salsa

Toledo's salsa was really HOT the last time we were there, we've been here probalby a dozen times over the past year, the substitute sauce they brought out was just taco sauce, not very good.

We have never been disappoited with the chips n salsa at La Posada in Clovis, we have dined here for over twenty years, always consistent, fresh, great Mexican food. Just had take-out with the girls this week from La Posada while the guys were in SF at the Niners game. Love La Posada!

Secondary Comment

What about that place downtown where County workers go and eat ... it's over on Belmont or Olive someplace. Maybe it is one of the East/West streets south of those two (Kings Canyon - maybe I am thinking about Javier's?). I know how to get there, but can't rmemeber the place. Always busy at lunch. Great food ... and obviously great chips & salsa as the appetizer.

What is it with all you people and your North Fresno hang-outs? Get out a little and try something else. Hole-in-the-wall juke joints rule. Commercial / mass-prepared food sucks (might as well be eating baby food).

North Fresno comment

I happen to live in North Fresno and take a little offense to the "Commercial/masss-prepared food...". Also, I take pride in supporting my neighborhood establishments. I'm not referring to the mass chains at River Park, but places such as Star of Siam (excellent Thai), Rhema (California-French cuisine) and Campagnia (California cuisine with Asian fusion). Just a few examples of great places up north.

It is kind of hard to find a place you don't know the name of or location. Anyhow, I do visit abroad as well. Senses is a great place to have dinner in the Tower District.

Sorry...We're talking chips & salsa. I already listed my favorites and not all were up from the north area. :-)

Chips & Salsa @ HOME!!!

Make your own?

10 Roma Tomatos
1 or 1.5 White Onion(s)
1 or 1.5 bunch of Cilantro
1 bunch of Onion Spears
2 or 3 Jalipenos
2 Garlic Cloves
1.5 Teaspoon of salt
1/2 Teaspoon of Pepper

Optional: Avacado to make Guacamole

#1 - Wash the food, wash your hands, take your time, don't cut yourself.

Dice the tomatos (time consuming)
-> Watery: include tomato juices (pico)
-> Chunky: drain tomato juices (me)
Dice the Onions (cry me a river)
Mince the Cilantro (get busy time)
Chop the Onion Spears (comic relief)
Mince, Dice or Chop the Jalipenos (don't rub your eyes)
Mash the Garlic Cloves (wash your hands)
Mix in Salt & Pepper (subjective/vairable amounts)

Let it sit / chill in frige for an hour (or overnight).

If you want (super fresh) guacamole, add 4 Medium-sized Avacodos (subjective / variable). Always make sure to set aside some of the salsa for guacamole making, or visa versa, preserving some of the salsa for those who don't like guacamole.

Typically I make this in large batches for work (3x or 4x the size listed here, but this is the base recipe), once every month or two. Major hit.

Take your pick of chips from the store (I prefer Tostios), or learn to make them on the stove / oven at home. Oven baked usually works best if you prepare the chips ahead and bake while you make the salsa.

Yes, it can be more expensive than going out for Chips & Salsa. It's also a lot more fun to sit and talk with someone while preparing a meal, and then enjoying the fruit (or vegetables) of your labor.

Don't forget to rent or buy a move. Takes about an hour. Lage batches take me 4 hours and 2 movies.

Chipotle's has it!

Get over to Fig Garden and have some of Chipotle's chips. You'll never go anywhere else! There's a hint of lime in the salt and you can have your choice of salsa. Don't forget to add a side of thier out-of-this-world guacamole!

BOBBY SALAZAR'S for best Chips & Salsa!

No doubt for me... Bobby Salazar's has the BEST C&S in the valley. Chips are always fresh, warm and crispy... Salsa is always chunky and flavorful. I like that it's medium in it's "hotness" but it certainly doesn't lack any zip. And I can eat lots of it and it doesn't spoil my appetite for the meal. Heck, I like it by itself. But oh, those chips... YUMMY!

Bobby's for Chips and Salsa!!!!!!!

I have loved the chips and salsa at Sals for decades. Used to go to Sals in Selma and now go to the Northeast/west Salazars on Perrin. I remember when Susie Riofrio(sp?) started the recipe they are still using. Combine that salsa (not to hot but with full flavor) and WARM CHIPS!(Get a clue the rest of the Mexican resturaunts, warm your chips). I skip getting tortillas with my meals and use the chips to scoop up my food with a litle salsa on top. Awesome!!! Makes my mouth water just thinking about it!!!!!

Salsa

Susie "The Salsa Lady" makes the best!

Chips & Salsa

I have to admit that Chevy's chips & salsa is right up there. Food is not that great but I like their light chips with the smokey salsa. Similar salsa can be found at Fajita Fiesta. They serve their salsa with a thicker chip.

Plaza Ventana is very good as well.

For a different taste all around, I enjoy Chiptole Grill. The salt & lime flavored chips are delicious!

Absolutely the BEST chips and salsa!

Plaza Ventana on Shaw/Marks by far has the best chips and salsa! I love mexican food and have been to so many mexican restaurants in fresno, but I must say that this place has them beat. You get seated and right away you get a basket of homemade, warm and crispy multicolored chips and a plate containing three different types of salsa. Their pico-de-gallo is my favorite! I never do take-out there because of their chips and salsa and I often end up asking for more so I can put it on my meal! Trust me...try it!

Sal's at Fresno and Alluvial

It is truely an office party every time we cater in from Sal's. And the main topic is always the Salsa- 3 pints is barely enough for 8 people! And we all have stopped by on our way home to get some for the weekend! It is really the best around and the rest of the food is great as well!

Chips and salsa

Probably the greatest chips and salsa are available at Toledos Restaurant on Shaw in Clovis. Nice snappy, fresh, warm chips and freshly made salsa that has that certain smolder appeal. Lovely and tasty, with a slowly increasing Volcanic intensity that always requires a cold Corona to go with them. If you eat enough of it, the menu becomes difficult to read through the tears in your eyes. Just a slight exaggeration, of course. The service is just excellent, with smiles and attentiveness all around.

Bobby Salazars at Champlain/Perrin (near Longs Drug Store)

You would think you died and went to heaven after having Bobby Salazars chips and salsa. It is made daily from fresh ingredients and it is undoubtedly so addicting; I normally eat several baskets of their chips. They are kept hot and the salsa is truly the best, trust me! I am referring to the location at Champlain and Perrin, near Longs Drug Store.
