Just visited Vegetarian New Stars Restaurant last night and was pleasantly surprised. It's located at 1134 E. Champlain Dr. (Champlain & Perrin). They serve true Vegans by providing organic food and do not include Whey in a lot of their food. Being a meat guy, vegetables are not in my typical diet, but I like to venture from time to time. New Stars has an Asian influence and you’ll notice right away once you go over the menu. We ordered Spring Rolls, Pho, Vietnamese Sandwich, Vegetable Chow mein and a side of Fries for my daughter. Also, a coconut cake was offered for desert.
The Spring Rolls had tofu, mint and sprouts wrapped in green leaf lettuce and rolled w/rice paper. Served with peanut sauce. These were very good. My daughter actually ate two of them. It was amazing, since she’s only three-years old and had fries in front of her.
I had the Vietnamese Sandwich. It was nicely toasted bread with lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, cilantro and sautéed tofu. It’s flavored with veganaise and green oil. I was expecting a thicker piece of tofu, but instead, I was pleasantly surprised to have it thinly sliced and mixed with shredded carrots and onions. I don’t care much for mayo, but the veganaise was very tasty. I enjoyed this sandwich quite a bit.
My wife had the Pho. New Stars stayed the course to keep this soup dish traditional without beef, poultry, or fish. My wife allowed me a taste and I would definitely order this dish on a cool day. It included rice noodles, veggie meats in a broth. Served with bean sprouts, jalapenos, lemon and Asian basil. There was one meat-flavored tofu in the soup that was a little less than desirable, but the soup was still great.
Our guest had the Vegetable Chow Mein – Stir fried chowmein, vegetables and soy in a garlic sauce. Served over a bed of crispy noodles. It’s vegetable chow mein…there is better elsewhere, but it was still good.
The most surprising items we ate were the fries and cake. The fries were fried just right with crispiness on the outside and soft inside. Another table was talking about them as well. I don’t know how you can bake a cake without milk, eggs…etc. without being stale, but the coconut cake was just the opposite. Nice and moist and rich.
Our overall experience was very good. The décor was nice and service was attentive. Prices were very reasonable too.
